I’ve been watching the AI assistant space evolve, and Snap’s new Specs Intelligence feels like a meaningful step forward, even if it also raises some uncomfortable questions about what we’re willing to share with our devices.
Snap is positioning Specs Intelligence as an ‘anticipatory AI service’ that does something most current AI assistants don’t: it proactively surfaces information based on understanding your goals, relationships, and routines. It’s launching alongside Snap’s AR glasses, but you can start using it on iOS today through preview access.
What makes this different from Gemini’s Spark or Meta’s Muse? The anticipatory angle is key. Instead of waiting for you to ask it something, Specs Intelligence is designed to know when you need help. Before a meeting, it surfaces decisions to make and things to remember. Before a trip, it assembles your flight and hotel information while flagging that work deadline happening during your vacation. That’s actually useful.
The Context Problem AI Needs to Solve
I think the real insight here is that most AI assistants fail because they lack context. They’re smart, but they’re dumb about you. You have to tell them everything. With Specs Intelligence, you connect your Gmail, Slack, calendar, travel apps, and whatever else matters to your life. The service then builds a model of your priorities and patterns.
From a developer perspective, this is interesting because it suggests the future of AI assistants isn’t just better models, but better architectures for understanding user context across fragmented digital lives. We’ve been treating AI as a chat interface problem when really it’s a context management problem.
Snap says the system uses ‘a proprietary combination of open-source models hosted in the US alongside local LLMs.’ They’re mixing cloud and on-device processing, which makes sense for something that needs to be responsive and private. But the vagueness here is telling. We don’t know exactly what’s running where, or how much processing happens locally versus in the cloud.
Trust Is the Real Blocker
Here’s where I get skeptical. Snap says personal content won’t be used to train models or serve ads, and they claim they can’t access what you share with Specs Intelligence. But this is the same promise we’ve heard from every company that’s asked for broad data access.
The trust problem is real. Most of us found it creepy when we learned how much data these companies already collect. Now they’re asking us to voluntarily connect everything: email, calendar, work chat, travel plans. That’s a complete map of your life and priorities.
I understand why Snap is making these privacy promises. They need adoption, and data privacy is top of mind for users now. But the architecture matters here. If Specs Intelligence uses local LLMs for processing, that’s genuinely different from sending everything to a cloud backend. If they can demonstrate that the anticipatory reasoning happens on-device, that changes the threat model significantly.
The question for developers building on top of these systems: how much user context are you comfortable requesting? What’s the minimal data model that still creates value? This might be the most important question in AI development over the next few years.
What This Means for the Industry
Snap’s move signals that the AI assistant market is shifting from ‘can it answer questions?’ to ‘can it understand my life?’ That’s a harder problem, technically. It requires better integration with existing tools, better reasoning about priorities, and real personalization that goes beyond fine-tuning.
It also signals that AR glasses aren’t just a hardware play for Snap. They’re betting that the killer use case for AR is exactly this: information appearing in your view at the moment you need it most. An email notification feels intrusive on your phone. Information appearing in your AR view when it’s contextually relevant feels almost magical.
But there’s a darker implication. The company that best understands your context and priorities has enormous leverage over your decision-making. If Specs Intelligence decides to surface something prominently or hide something, you’re trusting that decision. That’s a form of power we don’t usually think about with AI assistants.
Snap isn’t inventing this problem, but they’re making it more visible and more intimate. The question isn’t really whether this technology will exist. It will. The question is whether we’ll build it in ways that respect human autonomy or exploit it.
