OpenAI shipped the GPT-5.6 family this morning across three tiers: Luna, Terra, and Sol. The headline numbers are compelling for cost-conscious teams, but the real story is more nuanced than the pricing table suggests.

The pricing narrative doesn’t tell the whole story

On surface level, the per-token costs look aggressive. Luna starts at $1/$6 per million tokens, Terra at $2.50/$15, and Sol at $5/$30. Compare that to Claude Opus at $5/$25 or Fable 5 at $10/$50, and you might think this is a clear winner. But we’re past the era where token cost alone determines value.

The real question is: how many reasoning tokens does each model burn on your specific task? OpenAI’s training clearly optimized for efficiency here. The Agents’ Last Exam benchmark is the smoking gun - across 55 professional workflows, GPT-5.6 Sol hits 53.6 versus Fable 5’s 40.5. Even Terra outperforms Fable 5 at roughly one-sixteenth the estimated cost. That efficiency advantage matters more than the per-token rate card.

I’ve had early access to Sol, and it’s undeniably competent. But here’s the thing: it hasn’t consistently outpaced Fable on the complex coding tasks I regularly throw at these models. That gap matters if you’re in the software development space.

The SWE-Bench Pro moment

There’s an uncomfortable subplot here. Fable 5 crushed all three GPT-5.6 models on SWE-Bench Pro (80% vs 64.6% for Sol). Then, conveniently, OpenAI published a post yesterday auditing that same benchmark and claiming roughly 30% of its tasks are broken.

I’m not saying the audit is wrong. Benchmark drift is real. But the timing is worth noting. This is what happens when models are compared on standardized tests with financial incentives behind the outcomes.

For developers relying on benchmarks to choose models, this is a reminder: run your own evals on your actual use cases. Agentic performance on professional workflows is different from code generation. Agents’ Last Exam might matter more to you than SWE-Bench Pro, or it might not. Only you know.

New API surface area

The guidance docs hint at substantial API changes. I haven’t fully explored them yet, but they’re significant enough that I’m planning updates to LLM to support the new features. This is typical OpenAI behavior - when they ship a new model family, they often bring new primitives.

The structured reasoning levels (none, low, medium, high, xhigh, max) are worth understanding. If you’re deep in the Claude ecosystem because of Fable 5’s performance, you have a real reason to test the waters here. The cost-to-performance ratio on agentic tasks is legitimately compelling. But if you’re working on code generation or specific reasoning tasks where Fable excels, moving just for price is probably premature.

The three-tier approach is smart product management. Luna and Terra let teams run high-volume tasks cheaply while Sol handles the complex work. But it also adds complexity to your inference pipeline - you need heuristics to route requests to the right model.

One more thing: the February 16th 2026 knowledge cutoff is recent, which is good. The million-token context window is table stakes now, and the 128K output tokens match what you get elsewhere. None of this is differentiated.

The long game

What strikes me most is the efficiency focus. OpenAI explicitly tuned these models to get more useful work from fewer tokens. That’s the direction the industry is moving. Raw capability scaling has diminishing returns; optimizing the token-to-value ratio is where the real competition happens now.

The pelican examples (including the absurd 3D pelican tricycle video from their livestream) are their way of showing reasoning consistency. It’s actually a decent test: can the model stay coherent across multiple complex visual generations? The answer seems to be yes.

For developers, the choice between GPT-5.6 and Fable 5 is getting harder to make in the abstract. It depends on your specific workflows, reasoning requirements, and tolerance for API churn. The smart move is probably to treat these as complementary tools rather than replacements and let your actual benchmarks tell you when to switch.
