Apple finally shipped something that feels like the future of AI on mobile devices. After testing iOS 27’s new Siri AI for a month, I can say without hesitation that it’s genuinely impressive when it works. But its success or failure will be determined by forces entirely outside of Apple’s control: developers.
The new Siri operates on a fundamentally different principle than its predecessor. Instead of routing you to an app to perform an action, it attempts to understand what you want and then reach into your ecosystem to make it happen. When I asked Siri about the band playing order at a concert, it didn’t open Safari and hand me off to search. It parsed the webpage, searched the web, and gave me the answer directly. I didn’t have to context-switch or navigate through multiple apps.
This shift from app-first to user-intent-first is the real innovation here. Over the past month, I’ve caught myself reaching for Siri first almost instinctively. It’s practically stopped me from opening my browser for most queries because it’s simply faster and more enjoyable to swipe down and ask. When Siri successfully parsed my WWDC briefings from email and added six calendar events with correct times, it felt like magic. These interactions have genuinely altered how I expect my phone to behave.
The Developer Challenge
But here’s where reality sets in: Siri’s capabilities are currently limited to Apple’s own ecosystem. If your data lives in Gmail, Telegram, Notion, or any number of third-party services, Siri can’t see it. This isn’t a technical limitation of the AI itself. It’s an architectural decision that requires developers to actively integrate with Siri’s new systems.
Implementing this support is no trivial task. According to Matthew Cassinelli, who worked on Workflow before Apple acquired it, the conceptual challenge is “creating comprehensive support for every screen and function within an app.” Developers need to define entities (the types of data their app contains) and intents (the actions Siri can perform with that data). These aren’t simple toggles or checkbox features. They require serious engineering effort.
Talk to any developer who’s been exploring the iOS 27 SDK, and you’ll hear the same thing: they’re excited about the potential, but they’re also daunted by the scope of work required. For large companies like Google, the calculus is even more complex. If Siri can pull your email directly onto your screen, why would you open Gmail? That’s a direct hit to their ad revenue model.
The Google Question
This is where the entire premise gets philosophically interesting. Google built an empire on the premise that users would always open its apps to find information, which meant showing them ads along the way. Now, with Siri AI potentially surfacing that information without ever opening the app, Google loses visibility into that interaction.
Google is making the exact same bets that Apple is, though. Their AI Overviews serve a similar function: condensing information so users don’t have to visit websites directly. So they’re clearly preparing for a world where ads aren’t the primary revenue driver. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll cooperate with Siri AI in the same way Apple is cooperating with its own services.
The real incentive for Google to support Siri AI is consumer choice. If one email app supports Siri AI fully and Gmail doesn’t, I’m more likely to switch. That’s a threat that might be powerful enough to drive adoption, but it’s not guaranteed.
I’ve already hit frustrating walls where Siri misunderstands my natural language requests, requiring me to adjust my phrasing to use specific keywords. When I asked Siri to “remind me to buy these tickets when they go on sale,” it just created a generic reminder instead of understanding the context. This happens often enough that it breaks the illusion of natural interaction. For Siri AI to truly succeed, these semantic misunderstandings need to become exceptions, not the norm.
What’s at Stake
Right now, we’re looking at a partial version of what Apple promised. It’s a public beta OS with a beta version of Siri, and only a glimpse of the full experience. Smaller apps like LookBack: Contacts History can benefit enormously from Siri AI surface them to users who otherwise forget they exist. But that only works if developers actually build the integrations.
Apple has successfully pushed major features before, but this is different. Previous initiatives like Dark Mode or iPad apps directly enhanced the experience within those apps. This time, Apple is asking developers to do work primarily to improve an experience that takes users away from their app. The incentive structure is inverted.
The question isn’t whether Siri AI is impressive in its current form. It genuinely is. The question is whether the developer ecosystem will collectively decide it’s worth the effort to make it truly intelligent across their apps, or whether we’ll end up with a feature that works beautifully inside Apple’s walled garden while the rest of the mobile internet remains out of reach.
