OpenAI GPT-5.6 Family: Luna, Terra, and Sol Breakdown

OpenAI dropped the GPT-5.6 family this morning and, as usual, the announcement is a mix of genuinely impressive numbers and carefully framed comparisons. The three-tier lineup, Luna, Terra, and Sol, follows a naming convention that feels more poetic than practical, but the underlying specs are worth taking seriously.

What You Actually Get

All three models share the same foundation: a February 16th, 2026 knowledge cutoff, a one-million token context window, and 128,000 maximum output tokens. That context window is significant. For developers building agentic pipelines or working with large codebases, having consistent context across the entire family means you can prototype on Luna and scale to Sol without rearchitecting your prompts.

Pricing lands at $1/$6 per million input/output tokens for Luna, $2.50/$15 for Terra, and $5/$30 for Sol. Comparing sticker prices against Claude’s Fable 5 at $10/$50 makes GPT-5.6 look like a bargain, but I’d caution against reading too much into raw token costs right now. Reasoning token usage varies wildly between tasks and models, and a “cheaper” model that burns three times the reasoning tokens on a complex workflow is not actually cheaper. This is something I think developers need to benchmark on their own workloads before committing to a pricing story.

The Benchmark Wars Are Getting Messy

The headline claim from OpenAI is around Agents’ Last Exam, an evaluation covering long-running professional workflows across 55 fields. GPT-5.6 Sol scores 53.6, beating Claude Fable 5 by 13.1 points at adaptive reasoning. Even more striking, Terra and Luna are claimed to outperform Fable 5 at roughly one-sixteenth the estimated cost. If that holds up in practice, it is a meaningful shift for anyone building cost-sensitive agentic systems.

But here is where it gets interesting. Fable 5 scores 80% on SWE-Bench Pro versus Sol’s 64.6%. That is a substantial gap on a software engineering benchmark that most developers actually care about. And the day before this launch, OpenAI published a piece claiming roughly 30% of SWE-Bench Pro tasks are broken. The timing is, let’s say, convenient. I am not saying the audit findings are wrong, but publishing benchmark criticism the day before your competitor’s strongest benchmark looks bad for you is a pattern worth noting.

I have had early access to Sol for the past week or so, and my honest take: it is a very capable model. On general reasoning and document-heavy tasks it performs well. But for the complex, multi-file coding workflows I have been running, Fable still feels sharper to me. That is subjective and task-dependent, but it is consistent with what the SWE-Bench numbers suggest.

What Developers Should Actually Pay Attention To

Beyond the benchmarks, the model guidance page and new API features are where the real developer story lives. The reasoning effort levels, ranging from none through low, medium, high, xhigh, and max, give you fine-grained control over the cost-quality tradeoff. The pelican benchmark page (yes, really) shows costs spanning from 0.71 cents for Luna at effort none all the way to 48.55 cents for Sol at max reasoning. That is a 68x cost range within the same model family, which tells you how much the effort setting matters for budget management.

For developers integrating with the API, this level of control is genuinely useful. You can route simple classification or extraction tasks to Luna at low effort and reserve Sol at high effort for the tasks that actually need it. Building that routing logic well is going to separate teams that use these models efficiently from teams that burn budget unnecessarily.

I also want to flag that I need to look more carefully at the new API features in this release. There are enough changes that LLM tooling integrations will need updates, and I suspect the effort parameter alone will require some thoughtful defaults for anyone building on top of these models.

The broader industry implication here is that we are moving toward a world where model selection is less about picking one flagship and more about orchestrating a fleet. Luna for speed and cost, Sol for depth, with effort levels tuning the tradeoff in real time. That architectural shift changes how you think about latency, cost forecasting, and even how you evaluate models during development.

The real question is not which model wins a benchmark today, but which provider gives you the best tools to build systems that stay useful as the underlying models keep changing.
